Class Descriptions

Math

Each week, students are introduced to a new mathematical concept through engaging group instruction. Once the lesson has been explored together, students work at their individual ability level for guided practice and recommended homework. This approach allows every child to be appropriately challenged while building confidence and understanding.

Math Games

Math comes alive through strategy games, logic puzzles, and hands-on problem-solving activities. Students develop mathematical thinking, reasoning, and number sense in a relaxed, enjoyable environment. This class is especially well suited for students who may feel hesitant or anxious about math, helping them discover that learning mathematics can be both fun and rewarding.

English Language Arts (ELA)

Students strengthen the foundations of language through handwriting, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and written expression. Instruction is tailored to each student’s ability, allowing every learner to progress at a comfortable pace while developing strong communication skills.

Reading

Reading lessons are built around engaging, high-interest topics that inspire curiosity and a love of learning. Students develop fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking while exploring literature and informational texts. Activities encourage discussion, analysis, and confidence as readers.

Kitchen Science

Kitchen Science transforms everyday ingredients into exciting scientific investigations. Through hands-on experiments, students develop observation skills, scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving while exploring chemistry, physics, biology, and earth science in a fun, memorable way. This class encourages students to ask questions, make predictions, test ideas, and discover how science connects to everyday life.

Literature & Poetry

Students will explore timeless classics alongside modern favorites, discovering the joy of great stories and memorable poems. From the whimsical poetry of Shel Silverstein to the imaginative worlds of Roald Dahl—and many other beloved authors—students will strengthen their understanding of the English language while developing a love of literature. Together, we will learn to identify literary techniques, make inferences, analyze characters and themes, and think critically about the texts we read.

Percy Jackson Book Study

Join Percy Jackson on an unforgettable adventure through the world of Greek mythology! As we read Percy Jackson and the Olympians, students will strengthen reading comprehension,

vocabulary, and critical thinking while exploring the characters, plot, and themes of the novel. Along the way, we will discover the myths, gods, monsters, and heroes that inspired the story, making connections between ancient Greece and modern literature. Through discussions, creative projects, writing activities, and hands-on challenges, students will develop a deeper appreciation for both classic mythology and contemporary storytelling.

IEW Writing (8+ only)

Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum, students will learn to write with confidence, structure, and creativity. Through engaging source texts, students develop skills in note-taking, keyword outlines, sentence construction, stylistic techniques, and paragraph and essay writing. Lessons build grammar, vocabulary, and organization naturally while giving students the tools to become clear, thoughtful, and effective communicators. Instruction is tailored to each student’s ability, allowing writers of all levels to grow and succeed.

Tin Whistle

The tin whistle is a wonderful introduction to music, offering students a fun and accessible way to develop musical skills. In this class, students will learn proper technique, note reading, rhythm, breath control, and simple music theory while playing a variety of folk songs and familiar melodies. As students progress, they will build confidence, improve listening skills, and experience the joy of making music together in a supportive and encouraging environment. No prior musical experience is necessary.

Logic & Critical Thinking

Students will develop the skills to think clearly, reason carefully, and solve problems with confidence. Through logic puzzles, strategy games, brainteasers, mysteries, debates, and real-world challenges, students will learn to recognize patterns, evaluate evidence, draw thoughtful conclusions, and communicate their reasoning effectively. This engaging class encourages curiosity, perseverance, and creative problem-solving while building skills that support success across all areas of learning.

Ancient History

Travel back in time as we explore the fascinating civilizations of the ancient world, loosely following The Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer. Students will discover the people, places, inventions, and events that shaped history—from Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt to Greece, Rome, and beyond. Through stories, maps, hands-on projects, games, literature, art, and primary sources, history comes alive in an engaging and memorable way. Students will strengthen historical thinking and geography skills.

Earth Science

Discover the amazing planet we call home through hands-on investigations and engaging experiments. Students will explore topics such as rocks and minerals, weather, oceans, landforms, volcanoes, earthquakes, fossils, ecosystems, and the water cycle while learning how Earth’s systems work together. Lessons encourage observation, scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving through experiments, models, and projects. This class inspires curiosity about the natural world while building a strong foundation in Earth science.
